Lowcountry remembers radio legend, honors his love for animals

BLUFFTON, S.C. (WTOC) - The Lowcountry community gathered on Sunday to remember a voice that helped shape the region for decades: longtime radio host Mark Robertson.
Robertson spent nearly 50 years behind the mic at 98.7 “The River” before losing his battle with pancreatic cancer.
He also founded the station’s annual “Christmas Wish” program 25 years ago, supporting families facing similar struggles during the holidays.
“His passing marks the loss of a trusted broadcaster, community advocate, and friend to generations across Savannah and Bluffton,” organizers wrote. “Known for keeping listeners informed and entertained, Robertson built a legacy that extended far beyond the airwaves. ”

Friends and listeners reflected on his passion for animals. Palmetto Animal League and Hilton Head Humane Association Okatie Campus will be on site with adoptable pets, educational materials, and information about fostering, pet care, and spay and neuter services.
“He represents all that is good in the animal world, and we couldn’t be more grateful for everything he’s done for the animals and for our organization as well,” said Hilton Head Humane Association Executive Director Franny Gerthoffer. “So to pay him honor here today is the least that we can do to celebrate a life so well lived, and so well dedicated to the welfare of the animals.”
