Fried pickles fund $5,000 in college scholarships for local restaurant employees

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A popular appetizer turned into big-time support for three local restaurant workers.

The 5 Spot restaurants, owned by the local hospitality group GLGSAV, recently awarded $5,000 in scholarships to three employees through its Serving Success Scholarship Program.

The initiative is funded by a community-driven promotion: $1 from every fried pickle appetizer sold at 5 Spot locations goes directly into the scholarship pool.

This year’s winners are Somaria and Abby from the Richmond Hill location, and Piper from the Midtown Savannah location. Somaria is heading to Louisiana State University and Abby is attending the University of Georgia, both to pursue careers in law. Piper, a high school junior, used her scholarship to attend an advanced summer studies program to prepare for college.

“The restaurant industry is about more than serving food; it’s about investing in the community,” GLGSAV and the 5 Spot restaurants owner, Brian Huskey said. “We wish Somaria, Abby, and Piper the very best in the coming year.”

The program offers annual awards ranging from $250 to $2,000 to help local workers cover tuition, books, housing and other school-related expenses.
