Trial delay likely for two accused in armed robbery killing of Savannah father

by Madalyn Bierster

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The family of a Savannah father is hoping for justice this week, but that is expected to be postponed.

Two weeks ago, the State filed a motion to continue this murder trial, after conflicts with hearings in other cases. The Defense did not object to the motion to continue either.

The motion has not yet been ruled on and is expected to be brought up Monday morning in front of Judge Walmsley.

29-year-old Alexis Marie Williams and 29-year-old Angelo Lamount Harley will appear before the judge, facing multiple charges, including felony murder.

Harley and Williams are charged in the 2023 shooting death of 38-year-old Jose Ramirez during an armed robbery on Labor Day.

The shooting happened around 8:20 that night on Smart and Cleland Streets. The indictment says the two lured Ramirez to a home in the 1600 block of Damon Street, the next street over.

The shooting scene, according to SPD, is at the red pinpoint. The address listed in the indictment, that Ramirez was allegedly lured to, is shown at the grey pinpoint.

Harley was arrested just over a month after the shooting. Williams was arrested in April of 2024.

The indictment alleges Harley is the one who pulled the trigger, and he’s a convicted felon. The indictment says he was convicted of aggravated assault in June of 2023, just 3 months prior to Ramirez’ death.

He has two other prior convictions expected to be brought up at trial.

We’ve spoken with Ramirez’s family previously. You can find that coverage here.

His family said at the time, “A person cannot be replaced in the way that we say, ‘well, another one can do his job.’ Especially in the family, you cannot replace a father for four kids.”

A friend, Israel Rosas, says he’s known Ramirez for years and claims the 38-year-old was driving home in his van on Labor Day evening when he was killed.

Ramirez was a father of four and a faith-oriented person who taught Bible classes at one point.

He was well-known in local congregations, including Immanuel Baptist, says Rosas.

Prosecutors believe this shooting was the result of an armed robbery originally.

A new attorney was just appointed to Williams on November 10th.

Harley wrote a letter to the Clerk of Court on November 19th citing ‘ineffective assistance of counsel and misconduct.’

Judge Timothy Walmsley will be presiding over Monday’s hearing. We will provide updates as the case continues through the courts.
