City of Savannah to reopen bidding for former Olympia Café space on River Street

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah will reopen a competitive bidding process for one of River Street’s most recognizable commercial spaces after the former tenant, Olympia Café, declined to move forward with a new lease agreement.

The city-owned space inside the historic Thomas Gamble Building, formerly occupied by Olympia Café, is currently vacant as the building undergoes extensive renovations. Olympia Café’s lease expired at the end of 2025.

City officials previously re-solicited proposals for the property in mid-2025 in accordance with state law governing public lease opportunities. Following the competitive process, Olympia Café was selected as the highest-scoring proposer, and the Savannah City Council voted Oct. 9, 2025, to award the lease and authorize negotiations.

However, after negotiations, Olympia Café informed the city it would not proceed with the lease because of internal business matters, officials said.

“Olympia Café made this location into a cultural and culinary landmark in Savannah, creating decades of great memories for locals and visitors alike,” City Manager Jay Melder said in a statement. “We were excited to extend the Olympia Café lease, but we respect the decisions that the owners of Olympia Café have made regarding their business and their partnership.”

Melder said the city is now looking ahead to the future of the prominent riverfront property.

“Even though we will all miss Olympia Café, we are looking forward to seeing what new business might be able to define the next generation of memories and meals at this prime location,” he said.

The city plans to invite qualified businesses to submit proposals outlining their concept, operational plans, design vision, financial capacity and relevant experience.

“This process is designed to be fair, transparent, and competitive,” said Cristy Lawrence, the city’s senior director of real estate and capital projects. “Our goal is to find a tenant whose concept complements River Street, honors the significance of the location, and serves both residents and visitors.”

The former Olympia Café site is considered one of Savannah’s most sought-after commercial opportunities because of its high visibility and connection to the city’s historic riverfront.

City officials said a new solicitation for proposals is expected to be released in the coming months.
