Statesboro reopens longtime neighborhood park after years of closure

STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Statesboro will celebrate the reopening of Whitesville Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony next week.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21 at 1:30 p.m. at Whitesville Park on Raymond Street Extension.

City leaders and community partners will mark the completion of a major renovation project that brings new life to a space that has long served as a gathering place for the Whitesville community.

The park had been closed since 2016 due to aging infrastructure and maintenance issues. After the property was transferred to the city in 2022, officials moved forward with plans to restore it using $1.2 million in federal American Rescue Plan funds.

Renovations include a new playground, refurbished basketball court, modern restrooms, and covered pavilions.

Officials say the upgrades are designed to provide a safe and welcoming space for residents of all ages while honoring the park’s history in the community.
