Savannah nurse recognized during National Nurses Week for saving patient’s life
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A registered nurse at St. Joseph’s Candler Hospital saved a patient’s life when she performed the Heimlich maneuver during her lunch break.
Alicia McCullough, who works in the oncology department, was eating lunch when she noticed a patient choking.
“You’re choking,” McCullough said.
Joanne Smith, a Bulloch County resident, is a patient at St. Joseph’s Candler and is battling an autoimmune disorder that affects every muscle in her body, including the ones she uses to eat food.
“I was scared,” Smith said. “Alicia saved my life.”
First time performing life-saving technique
McCullough said she was shocked because it was the first time she ever had to perform the maneuver.
“I was just glad to be in the right place at the right time,” McCullough said. “Oh my God, like I really actually just saved this woman’s life.”
The incident created a lifelong friendship between the two women and deepened Smith’s appreciation for nurses.
“There’s nothing that you can do that can pay for having your life extended another day,” Smith said.
McCullough said the recognition during National Nurses Week is meaningful.
“It feels good to just be noticed, to be recognized for the hard work that I do,” McCullough said.
Wednesday marks the start of a national week-long celebration for nurses. Coastal Empire and Low Country hospitals are celebrating their nurses this week with activities.
St. Joseph’s Candler hospital is celebrating their nurses with five days of activities including themed breakfasts to therapy dog visits.
Beaufort Memorial is also honoring their nurses with a scrubs pop-up sale, a free coffee cart, and city council proclamations.
