Savannah firefighter escapes serious injury after porch collapses during house fire

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Savannah firefighter is recovering after a porch collapsed beneath them while crews battled a structure fire Wednesday night.

According to IAFF Savannah Firefighters, crews were dispatched around 9:27 p.m. to the area of Bolton and Montgomery streets for a possible fire. While firefighters were responding, multiple 911 callers reported a building on fire.

Engine 3 was the first to arrive. The four-person crew deployed a 2½-inch hose line to the second floor and began an interior attack on the fire.

During the operation, one firefighter made entry into the building when the porch suddenly gave way and collapsed beneath them.

Additional crews had arrived by that time and quickly rescued the downed firefighter from the compromised area.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 9:40 p.m.

Officials said the firefighter was not seriously injured and is expected to recover.

The union said the incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable dangers firefighters face while responding to emergencies.

Units responding included Engine 3, Engine 4, Engine 5, Engine 6, Truck 5, Rescue 1, Battalion Chief 1, HazMat 2 and Safety 1.
