Officers respond to downtown Savannah shooting, one victim transported

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah police are investigating a shooting near East 33rd Street and Live Oak Street that sent one person to the hospital Tuesday evening.
Savannah Police and Chatham County EMS responded around 5:47 p.m. to the 1200 block of East 33rd Street after reports of gunfire. Investigators said they found one person with a gunshot wound to the upper leg laying in the road.
The victim was taken to Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police maintained a large presence in the area as investigators marked the scene and collected evidence.
Neighbors said the latest shooting is adding to growing frustration in the community. Tamla Williams said she was inside a nearby home when she heard what she initially thought were fireworks, but later learned it was gunshots.
Williams said residents — including elderly neighbors — are tired of repeated violence and want peace.
“They just want peace. Just peace and quiet,” Williams said. “To be able to sit on their porches and stuff and just relax without all the non-sense.”
Based on previous WTOC reporting, Tuesday’s shooting is the third in the East 33rd Street area since March, following earlier shootings in March and April.
