Savannah Police investigating deadly shooting along Benton Boulevard

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - [UPDATE: 8/22/2026: 3:03 P.M.] An 18-year-old has been arrested in connection with an accidental fatal shooting in Savannah, according to police.

Savannah Police identified the suspect as Victor Bernardo Salazar.

Northwest Precinct officers responded to a reported shooting in the 1400 block of Benton Boulevard around 8:45 p.m. on Aug. 21.

Officers found an adult man inside a residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. EMS took him to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Salazar was detained at the scene. Following an initial investigation, police arrested him on charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Savannah Police Department says officers responded to a deadly accidental shooting in the 1400 block of Benton Blvd, Friday night.

The shooting happened around 9:00pm at the MAA Benton Apartments on Benton Blvd in Savannah.

SPD says the shooting resulted in the death of an adult male.

Alderwoman Bernetta Lanier also posted on Facebook saying SPD is on the scene of an accidental shooting.

The investigation is on-going.
