Man indicted in fatal DUI crash that killed Wilmington Island bicyclist

WILIMGTON ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - A man has been indicted in connection with a June DUI crash that killed a bicyclist on Wilmington Island.

Robert Brian Herfurt was indicted this week on the following charges:

• Three counts of first-degree homicide by vehicle
• One count of hit-and-run
• Two counts of driving under the influence

Georgia State Patrol says Herfurt was driving a 2013 Honda CR-V when he struck Andres Ampuero-Sierra near 816 Wilmington Island Road. Ampuero-Sierra was riding his bicycle when he was killed.

The indictment alleges that Herfurt left the scene without providing aid.

Court testimony revealed that Herfurt reportedly drove home with his vehicle’s airbags deployed and called 911 approximately 20 minutes after the crash.

Herfurt is scheduled to return to court next month to enter a plea before a judge.

The charges are allegations. Herfurt is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
