Jasper County residents raise concerns over proposed sand mine expansion

JASPER COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - People in Jasper County are speaking out against a proposed sand mining expansion, raising concerns about dust, noise, traffic and potential environmental impacts.

The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services held an informal meeting and public hearing Thursday in Ridgeland to discuss the proposal.

The project would expand the existing Glover Plantation Mine along Rabbit Cleland Road and Glover Road. The site would be used to mine topsoil, sand and clay.

Residents say they are concerned about how the expansion could affect their community, including nearby wetlands and drinking water.

“I just don’t believe it’s a good idea, and I think they’re just going to waste their money,” one resident said.

Another resident questioned why the area is being used for operations connected to development in neighboring Beaufort County.

“I just don’t understand how one little area has to supply so much trash from Beaufort County,” the resident said. “They don’t want it in Beaufort County, but they got it right out our door.”

Others said they worry the project could have lasting effects on the environment.

“And it just doesn’t seem like the environment or the ecology is being looked after,” another resident said.

The state is continuing to review the proposed expansion and is accepting public comments as part of the permitting process.
