Health officials urge caution after West Nile Virus detected in Chatham County mosquitoes

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Bug spray is becoming a must-have before heading outdoors after health officials confirmed West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in Chatham County.

The Coastal Health District announced Wednesday that three mosquito samples collected by Chatham County Mosquito Control recently tested positive for the virus. These are the first positive WNV tests in the district’s mosquito population this summer, coinciding with the start of peak mosquito season, which typically runs from late summer through fall.

Chatham County Mosquito Control regularly traps and tests mosquitoes to track viruses and direct local control efforts.

What is West Nile Virus?

West Nile Virus is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. While many infected individuals show no symptoms, others can develop mild to moderate symptoms, including:

Fever
Headache and body aches
Vomiting and diarrhea
Skin rash

In rare cases, the virus can lead to severe, sometimes fatal, neurological illnesses. Because there is no vaccine or cure for WNV, health officials emphasize that prevention is the best defense.

How to protect yourself: The ‘5Ds’

The Coastal Health District recommends practicing the “5Ds” of mosquito bite prevention to reduce your risk:

Dusk/Dawn: Avoid outdoor activities during these times when mosquitoes are most active.
Dress: Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants to keep skin covered.
DEET: Use an EPA-approved insect repellent containing DEET on exposed skin.
Drain: Empty any containers holding standing water—such as buckets, flowerpots, tarps, and barrels—to eliminate potential breeding grounds.
Doors: Keep doors and windows tightly closed, and repair any damaged screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
