Georgia Southern students say they’re being towed in own apartment lot

STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - Some Georgia Southern University students say they are being towed for parking in their own apartment complex’s lot during a recent game day weekend.

The complex, Eighteen18 at Southern on Chandler Road, is one block from GSU’s stadium, making it a prime parking location during weekend football games. The lot is designated for resident parking only.

Residents say they are being affected by the towing and are frustrated with the situation.

“It’s not really feeling like they have the best interest of the people who live here,” said Kyndasha Musgrave, a resident.

Towing beyond game day

Students say a towing company has been towing cars beyond game days.

One student said her roommate was recently given a warning sticker for parking at the complex despite having her pass displayed. The student said the roommate wrote “I live here” on the warning with an arrow pointing to the pass. The roommate’s car was hooked up to a tow truck a few days later, according to the student.

“I’ve probably seen like a lot of people talking about it. And I know like there’s a lot of parents that have gripes about it as well,” Musgrave said.

Parking passes

Students say other residents have received warnings or been towed after their pass fell off or, in one case, was never applied.

Musgrave said the sticker is a heat adhesive and that some people did not know how to keep it in place.

“Most of the people by the time they figured it out they’d put it somewhere else of them where they originally wanted it,” Musgrave said.

Cost to retrieve vehicles

The posted cost to get a towed car back is nearly $300. Residents say the cost is too high.

“I’d be pretty annoyed, especially since we’re college students you know college students are broke,” said Caron Thomas, a resident.

WTOC reached out to the towing company, which declined to comment. WTOC is still waiting to hear back from the property manager and will provide an update when more information is available.
