Witness in Savannah 2022 murder trial admits earlier statement to police was a lie
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - WTOC is continuing to closely follow the murder trial of Mikell Sanders. Sanders is accused of killing Mykel Price in 2022, just before Thanksgiving.
Grant Brothers Take the Stand
Two brothers who were also charged in the case and have accepted plea deals to testify. Both Grant brothers, who were present the day Price was killed, took the stand but neither could definitively tell the jury who fired the fatal shots.
Expert Testimony Reveals Details of the Crime
Expert witnesses provided key testimony, revealing that Price suffered seven gunshot wounds. The court was also shown photographs of the crime scene, including shell casings and a gun that was taken into evidence.
Marquis Grant’s testimony
When Marquis Grant took the stand, he told the court he went to where Price was staying to speak with him about a money issue. Grant said shots rang out while the two were talking and he ran away. Grant said that he could not remember much else from that day.
During cross-examination, prosecutors questioned Grant about answers he gave the court at the time of his plea deal. Grant acknowledged he gave police a name he said he heard on the streets.
“What name did you give the police?” the prosecutor asked.
“I gave them Mikell Sanders name because that’s the name that I heard on the streets,” Grant said.
Malik Grant’s Conflicting Testimony
Malik Grant’s testimony proved particularly noteworthy. When he took the stand, he told the jury he couldn’t recall the majority of what happened that day. Additionally, Grant revealed that he attempted to go back on the plea deal he had originally accepted.
When the defense asked him about his original statement to police, Grant’s testimony revealed significant inconsistencies:
Q: “So are you telling the truth today?”
A: “Yes, sir.”
Q: “When you say Mikell Sanders wasn’t there, are you telling the truth?”
A: “Yes, sir.”
Q: “When you say Mikell Sanders did not shoot and kill Mykel Price, are you telling the truth?”
A: “Yes, sir.”
Q: “If you said something different in the past, was that a lie?”
A: “Yes, it was a lie.”
