UPDATE: Underground power vault catches fire on West Congress Street

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - {UPDATE 5/3/26 10:06 a.m.} According to a Georgia Power spokesperson, Georgia Power experienced an equipment failure in an underground vault around 10 p.m. Saturday, resulting in what is known as a “flash.”

The company’s smart grid system responded quickly, and no outages were reported.

Georgia Power crews are actively making repairs.

Sidewalks near the intersection of W. Congress and Jefferson will be closed Sunday due to the location of the repairs. While the issue is contained and conditions are safe, Georgia Power encourages the public to avoid the sidewalk area while repairs are underway.

Full repairs are estimated to be completed by Monday.

{ORIGINAL STORY} The Savannah Fire Department is responding to an underground power vault incident on West Congress Street and Jefferson St.

They posted online at around 10:15 p.m. to avoid the area while crews continue to work.
