Video captures gunfire, crowd fleeing near W. Bay St. and MLK Jr. Blvd. in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah police are investigating a shooting in downtown Savannah after multiple rounds were fired near a parking lot along West Bay Street on Saturday night.

Video submitted to WTOC by Rocky Morgan captured moments before shots rang out and showed the crowd running away.

In the video, about 10 individuals are seen gathered in the Bay Street parking lot near the intersection.

It is across from the Holiday Inn, where the video is shot from.

A few of the individuals were seen shoving one another before the video ended and the other began, showing the crowds walking in different directions before shots rang out.

In the background, a woman’s voice can be heard saying, “They’re kids,” before calling 911.

According to the Savannah Police Department, officers responded to the 500 block of West Bay Street following multiple ShotSpotter alerts. Police confirmed no injuries were reported, though three unoccupied vehicles were struck by gunfire.

“Detectives are actively following up on leads, but no arrests have been made at this time,” SPD said in a statement. “We ask anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or use the SPD app.”

Savannah Police Chief Lenny Gunther addressed the incident while attending a scheduled Historic Savannah Branch NAACP event alongside Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, and other city leaders.

“I spoke about it earlier, you know, guns in the hands of our young adults, you know, it’s unfortunate, but we want to divert them in the right path. But if you choose to pull the trigger in our community, if you choose to let bullets fly, then justice has to be served, and you have no place in our streets,” he said.

Gunther said they’ve received this video and another showing several young adults fleeing from the area, and that investigators have already received several tips about the situation.
