Thousands flock to Augusta National ahead of 90th Masters Tournament

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WTOC) - Thousands of ticket-holders flocked to Augusta National Golf Club on Monday as the 90th Masters Tournament prepares to kick off.

Despite chilly morning temperatures, patrons arrived to see the course ahead of Thursday’s opening round. For some, it marks a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Just how manicured it is. I mean, it’s just unbelievable. It’s way better than on TV,” said Greg Bath, a Masters patron seeing Augusta National for the first time.

Bath is among thousands getting their first glimpse of the course just days before competition begins. Players won’t start competing until Thursday, but patrons can watch their favorites during practice rounds until then.

“Justin Thomas, Sergio [Garcia], obviously [Scottie] Scheffler. Just all these guys, watching what they’re doing is unbelievable,” Bath said.

For some patrons, the experience extends beyond watching. Peyton Landon competed in the Drive, Chip & Putt junior competition over the weekend, becoming one of the few who can say they’ve played Augusta National.

“I’m looking at it and it looks like a fairytale and it doesn’t look real, but it’s crazy that I’m here and all the champions have walked here,” Landon said.

The practice rounds continue through Wednesday. The tournament will begin on Thursday and conclude on Sunday.
