Third annual banned books reading brings community voices to the stage

by Shakuria Smith

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Community conversations about banned books are returning to Savannah.

The Learning Center at Senior Citizens Inc. will host its third annual “Who’s Reading Banned Books…And Why” event on Tuesday, February 10, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 3025 Bull Street. The program is free and open to the public.

Local leaders will discuss banned or challenged books that shaped their lives and read selections from those works. Organizers say the event comes as book challenges continue to make national headlines.

“Books have been banned for centuries, but recent efforts to remove titles from libraries and school curricula make conversations like this more important than ever,” said Roger Smith, director of The Learning Center.

Confirmed readers include representatives from Live Oak Public Libraries, the Savannah Black Heritage Festival, Georgia Writers Museum, SCAD’s Evans Center for African American Studies, and other community organizations.

The program is presented in partnership with the Savannah-Yamacraw Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

“This event reflects our shared commitment to education, history, and open dialogue,” said Patti Lyons, president of Senior Citizens Inc.

Now in its third year, the event continues to draw community members eager to engage with literature and current issues.
