SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Thursday Savannah leaders gathered to update their Vision Zero initiative.

It’s an effort to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries across the city.

So far this year, leaders say they’ve had five traffic related deaths.

The goal of the project is to have no deaths and no injuries on the roadway.

On Thursday leaders said that they’re working in all areas of the city to improve safety, whether it’s through widening crosswalks or more traffic calming devices.

So far for Vision Zero, leaders say they’ve implemented speed limit reductions on more than 75 streets.

They’ve added two school zones, one near Oglethorpe Charter school on Central Avenue.

The other, on High Gate Road near New Hampstead K-8.

Harold Taylor is the Transportation Coordinator.

He says projects like these are their main priority.

“With this particular grant, this is going to allow us to make various safety enhancements so some of these upgrades may include crosswalks enhancements, some bicycle lanes initiatives, some upgraded traffic signals, some VTEX technology for vehicle connectivity,” said Taylor. “Just a different couple things to expand across this whole corridor to improve safety.”

Another project they’re hoping to get off the ground soon would be located on Montgomery Street.

It’s a partnership with GDOT where they’re hoping to raise medians and add a wider section for walkers and bikers.
