Savannah Students Transform Sidewalks Into Art at Annual Festival

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Students at The Habersham School will turn sidewalks into colorful works of art this week during the school’s annual Sidewalk Arts Festival.

The event is set for Friday, March 13, at the Bible Baptist Church campus at 4700 Skidaway Road.

Students from Pre-K through 12th grade will create large sidewalk murals inspired by this year’s theme, “Preserving Places that Matter,” while competing in the school’s House System. The four houses, Pulaski, LaFayette, Madison, and Washington, will earn points toward the House Cup, awarded at the end of the academic year.

“Thoughtful and beautiful art enriches community, and joyful grace-filled community enriches art,” said Clay Hining, Dean of Students and Families, who calls the festival one of the school’s most anticipated traditions.

Guest judges from Savannah’s arts community include James Zamora, Foundation Studies Professor at SCAD, Allison Hall of The Small Creative and DreamHouse Studios, and Maggie Burton, a SCAD graduate and interpretive guide at the Telfair/Jepson Center.

Students will begin drawing at 8:30 a.m., with judging scheduled for around 11 a.m.

Organizers say the festival brings together students, teachers, and community members through art and friendly competition.
