Savannah State students to build Habitat home frame on campus
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah State University is turning part of its campus into a construction site for a cause.
The university is partnering with Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity to build the frame of a new home during a campus-wide Community Service Day on Wednesday, April 15.
The event is part of the investiture celebration for President Dr. Jermaine Whirl and will bring together students, faculty, and staff to support affordable housing efforts in Savannah.
The build will take place at T.A. Wright Stadium, where volunteers will work alongside Habitat for Humanity professionals to construct the frame of a home for a local family.
Organizers say the effort reflects the university’s commitment to leadership through service and community engagement.
“By building this home frame right here on campus, we are showing students that leadership isn’t just about what you achieve, but also how you use your hands and heart to lift your neighbors,” said Zerik Samples, CEO of Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity.
Volunteers can sign up for one of three two-hour shifts starting at 8:30 a.m. No prior construction experience is required, and all tools and guidance will be provided.
Refreshments will also be available for those participating.
Organizers say the partnership highlights a shared goal of building stronger communities through education, collaboration, and access to affordable housing.
