Richmond Hill airport proposal identifies possible location, size
RICHMOND HILL, Ga. (WTOC) - The future of an airport in Bryan County is a little clearer after the release of two studies to justify the project and identify a place to put it.
When the Richmond Hill - Bryan County Airport Authority meets on Aug. 18, 2025, the 11 members will be armed with data showing the need and demand for an airport, the size requirements, the cost, and five potential locations.
A justification study from Holt Consulting, conducted in 2023, recommends a 300-acre airport in Bryan County, with 14 hangars and a runway 5,000 feet long.
It estimates an airport based on these specifications would cost more than $128 million to build.
A Site Selection Study also lists five potential locations for the Richmond Hill airport, each with their own pros and cons.
Each site is evaluated based on access, layout, acquisition, required earthwork and airspace.
- Site 1 is almost 1,300 acres along Bryan Fisherman’s Co-Op Road.
- Site 2 is nearly 2,500 acres between Harris Trail Rd. and Popular Swamp Rd.
- Site 3 is 300 acres next to I-95 and U.S. 17.
- Site 4 is 400 acres south of U.S. 17, bordered by I-95.
- Site 5 is 500 acres south of Site 4 along U.S. 17 and Belfast Keller Rd.
The study shows Site 5 has the most advantages and fewest disadvantages.
Federal and state money would be used to fund approximately 95 percent of the estimated $128 million to build the Richmond Hill airport, according to the study.
Revenue from hangar and tie-down rentals for aircraft would fund operating costs on an annual basis.
The Richmond Hill - Bryan County Airport Authority will meet for the first time on Monday, Aug 18, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Richmond Hill City Hall.
