Rail failure on President St. crossing strands train in road

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - [UPDATE 4:50 p.m. 8/19/2025] The railway issue has been resolved and normal traffic flow is being restored, according to the Savannah Police Department.

[ORIGINAL STORY] Tuesday afternoon, the Savannah Police Department said a rail failure on President Street crossing is impacting traffic.

Police say the train is in the road.

According to a CEMA alert, the crossing will be closed for at least one hour.

“WB traffic will be diverted to Truman Pkway S. or rerouted back east toward Goebel & Pennsylvania Ave. EB traffic from General McIntosh will be diverted west to E. Broad St,” wrote Savannah Police in a social media post.

They said all vehicles stuck between Eastern Wharf and the rail crossing will be turned around and also rerouted west toward E. Broad St.

Additionally, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson has given a statement on the railroad issues on social media, saying it will take “at least an hour” for assistance to arrive and “an undetermined amount of time to rectify the siuation.”
