RTCA girls basketball heads home after score mishap
TOOMBS COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - On Wednesday, Robert Toombs Christian Academy girls basketball team was leading 31-25 over Citizens Christian Academy with 1:12 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
Citizens Christian shot three free throws, making one of them but the scorekeeper gave two points instead of one.
The game eventually went to overtime with the score tied at 51. RTCA eventually fell in double OT sending them home and sending Citizens Christian Academy to Friday’s Class A State Title game against Memorial Day.
Below is a statement from Robert Toombs Christian Academy’s Athletic Director Adam Calloway who was part of the discussion afterwards, challenging the ruling.
“We have spoken with the site director, the Associate Commissioner of the GIAA, and the President of the GISA regarding the situation. We were informed that there is nothing in place within GIAA or NFHS rules that allows the game to be overturned. While we are deeply disappointed for our girls, we want everyone to know we have exhausted every available resource in fighting for them. At this point, any further action would have to come directly from the GIAA. We believe the game speaks for itself, and we continue to stand behind and support our team.”

We also reached out to the Head Coach for RCTA’s Girls Basketball Team, Jacob Wilkinson who sent us the following statement:
“There was a scoring discrepancy which consisted of 2 points were added for 1 made free throw at the end of 3rd quarter. We hurt for our girls and we don’t like the outcome of GIAA’s decision and therefore, we want to make sure this never happens again. WTOC Sports Director Zach Fox will be in attendance this Friday afternoon from Columbus State and plans to meet with some of the GIAA officials on why it came to this point and what they can do to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
