Prescribed burn set to take place on North End of Tybee Island this Friday
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Tybee Island said a planned prescribed burn is set to take place on the north end of the island this Friday.
This burn is being conducted by the Georgia Forestry Commission, with help from Tybee Island Fire Rescue, as part of an ongoing sustainability effort.
The burn will remove invasive plant species and support the growth of native dune grasses that help protect our shoreline. Tybee said they are working in partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Birds Georgia for this burn.
Details of Tybee prescribed burn
- Fire lines will be established starting around 9:30 a.m.
- The burn will begin at approximately 10:00 a.m.
- The operation is expected to last a couple of hours, with completion around 12:00 p.m.
- You may see smoke in the area during and shortly after the burn
Tybee Island officials said this prescribed burn has been carefully planned by forestry professionals to ensure safe and controlled conditions, with weather and wind expected to be ideal on Friday.
What will you see after the burn?
Tybee Island officials said itt is normal to see smoldering stumps or light smoke within the burned area for a few days following the operation. This does not indicate an active or spreading fire.
