Old Savannah City Mission serves Easter meals to those in need
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Staff at Old Savannah City Mission prepared full holiday meals for those in need on Easter Sunday.
The shelter served breakfast and dinner and held an Easter mass. Staff said being able to give back to their community on Easter Sunday is a touching experience.
“It’s an honor, you know, this is our family man, and they look out for us and we try to look out for them,” said Luke Wilson, nighttime director at Old Savannah City Mission.
Cooks spent two days in the kitchen preparing the meals. The dinner plates had barbecue chicken, baked beans, potato salad and peach cobbler.
The Easter meals and service are an annual tradition at the shelter. Wilson said the day is something people look forward to for weeks.
“Really the fact that we care enough about them that we take our time, take our time to do this, it means a lot to the guys,” Wilson said.
Staff handed out around 75 hot dinners. People were able to pick up a meal to-go even when the doors to the shelter were closed.
Old Savannah City Mission regularly prepares meals for individuals facing homelessness. Mission leaders said the Easter event is more than just food — it is about making sure no one is forgotten during the holiday.
“Jesus only left two commandments, he said love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as you love yourself,” Wilson said. “It’s our way to spread his love to the community.”
Aside from meals, the organization provides overnight shelter, shower access and clean clothing for those in need. They also offer recovery programs and a free weekly health clinic.
Wilson said they are always looking for donations, whether it be food or lightly used clothing and blankets. The shelter also offers volunteer work for anyone looking to give back.
“Anybody that wants to get involved, you know, we’d love to have you,” Wilson said.
Information on how to donate can be found on the organization’s website.
