Memorial Day boating safety tips for Savannah-area waterways
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Marina officials are urging boaters to prioritize safety as thousands prepare to hit the water for Memorial Day weekend.
Officials stress every boat should carry life jackets, flares, a radio and a charged cell phone in case of an emergency.
Heavy traffic expected
The holiday weekend is drawing massive crowds to the Savannah River, including thousands headed to Daufuskie Island, accessible only by boat.
Dock officials say the increase in recreational traffic creates dangers on the busy waterway.
“Giving way to vessels who are either crossing your path, not going too fast, although there’s no wake signs here, just being conscious of all the other boaters,” said Blake Biren, dockmaster at IGY Savannah Harbor Marina.
“All the traffic, especially being the third largest port in America, you’re gonna have container ships going by, and always giving way to them as they are less maneuverable than smaller vessels.”
Designated drivers urged
Boaters on the water say having a designated driver is the most important safety measure to take.
“If you do plan on operating a boat this weekend, I’d recommend not drinking at all,” said Will Maryland, a boater.
“It’s the safest thing you can do. Sobriety is the safest thing against accidental harm or injury to anybody while on the waterways.”
Dredge pipe hazard
Boaters should watch for dredge pipe currently in the water near Fields Cut, between Daufuskie and Hilton Head. Experienced boaters warn some of it may not be marked.
The U.S. Coast Guard offers free vessel safety checks. Officials say boaters who haven’t had their vessel inspected should do so now.
