Lt. Gov. Burt Jones watches primary results in hometown

JACKSON, Ga. (WTOC) - Lt. Gov. Burt Jones will watch results come in at a party in his hometown of Jackson as he seeks the Republican nomination for governor.

Jones’ team said he is sticking to his roots. Jones is a fifth-generation Georgian and is using that to make voters feel as though they’re electing one of their own. He chose to be in his hometown of less than 6,000 residents during the primary.

Campaign focus on income tax cuts

His campaign’s main focus has been on reiterating his progress at cutting the state income tax and assuring more money in the pockets of Georgia families.

Jones has President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Trump posted a clip to Truth Social talking about Jones.

“He’s gonna be a great governor, he’s a fantastic person, always has been. He’s solid as a rock, he loves Georgia, loves everything about Georgia (so do I), I just want to let you know Burt Jones has my complete and total endorsement,” Trump said.

Close race with Jackson

Even with the president’s endorsement, it hasn’t been a smooth ride for Jones.

Polling indicates a very close race against businessman Rick Jackson. The two have feuded over TV commercials and have made this primary an expensive one to win.

“If we don’t squeak it out tonight, I loooove getting this guy in one-on-one, I can promise you that. I’ve been looking for that,” said Jones. “Cause like I said, we’ve had over 100 million dollars spent against us, most of them attack ads on myself, my family, whatever they could make up.”

One commercial from Jones’ team prompted Jackson to file a defamation lawsuit against the lieutenant governor. The lawsuit won’t reach a verdict before the primary.
