Last day of testimony in trial of Nicholas Kassotis

by Lindsey Stenger

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Wednesday was the final day of testimony in the case against Nicholas Kassotis, the 43 year old man accused of killing and dismembering his wife, Mindi Mebane Kassotis. Wednesday, Nicholas was the star witness for the defense, and his testimony was the last the jury would hear before deliberation.

The defense had a lot of questions that needed to be answered. Things like the couple’s financial struggles, the couple’s consistent relocating, and the biggest question mark, Jim McIntyre, the FBI agent that Kassotis says was the source of much of his life’s chaos.

The defense has hinted at this FBI agent, Jim McIntire, throughout the trial, but upon Kassotis’ testimony, questions about who and how he fits in begin to be answered.

“He told us at that time that he was taking over, making all of our rental arrangements, and he started taking over what we would unfortunately continue, which was moving pretty regularly,” said Kassotis.

According to Kassotis, Jim McIntyre was an FBI agent who had been investigating him and a series of violence towards the couple as a result of Kassotis’s job.

However, on the stand, Kassotis says he felt betrayed for trusting McIntyre to protect him and Mindi.

“They viewed Mindi as an impediment and that they would kill Mindi if they had been given the chance,” said Kassotis.

Another big question was about Mindi’s alleged pregnancy. Kassotis says he was under the impression she was pregnant the whole time.

However, the prosecution, in their final arguments, point to Kassotis’ desire to have a child as a potential motive.

‘He wanted kids so badly, he wanted them with Heather, he even went with Samantha days after the marriage to a what, a pre-conception appointment, he wanted kids, and he found out that Mindi wasn’t pregnant,” said the Assistant District Attorney Laurie Baio.

While the prosecution called on the jury to use common sense while deliberating. The defense pointed out the lack of concrete physical evidence that the state had.

The judge has not laid out the charges for the jury yet, but instead will do it Thursday morning when they meet for deliberation.
