Icy roads grip Savannah, Pooler and surrounding counties; Police urge drivers to use caution
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Law enforcement officials are warning drivers to stay off the roads as icy conditions continue to worsen across the area overnight.
Officers in Pooler report that multiple roadways are becoming extremely slick, particularly bridges and elevated surfaces, as temperatures continue to drop.
Authorities say the freezing conditions are expected to persist through the night, increasing the risk of black ice and making travel hazardous.
The Rincon Police Department has issued a Black Ice Advisory, urging motorists to use extreme caution on roadways, bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas where ice can form quickly and remain difficult to detect.
Several locations along Highway 21 are already icing over, according to police, including:
- The northbound viaduct
- 12th Street near Dashers Creek
- The area between Planet Fitness and Lisa Street
Police warn that black ice is often invisible and can develop even when roads appear dry, creating dangerous driving conditions.
Drivers who must travel are encouraged to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, and use heightened caution on bridges and elevated roadways.
Officials strongly advise residents to remain at home unless travel is absolutely necessary.
Anyone who encounters hazardous road conditions is asked to slow down and prioritize safety.
