ICE confirms what will happen to Toombs County student
BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - WTOC has now received confirmation from ICE about what has happened to Roberto Itzep- Caba and where he will end up next.
According to information on the Homeland Security locator page, Caba has been transferred to a detention facility in Louisiana, where detainees are typically processed before being deported.
In a statement to WTOC, an ICE spokesperson confirmed:
“ICE took custody after confirming he was an illegal alien with a final order of removal from 2017. He will remain in ICE custody until he is removed.”
This comes after Lyons police arrested the 18-year-old Toombs County High School student-athlete earlier this month for driving without a license and running a stop sign near the school.
He has no prior criminal record.
Caba’s family says they came to the United States from Guatemala in 2016 under an asylum claim.
His girlfriend and friends have since launched a GoFundMe page to help cover legal expenses and related costs, which has now raised more than $15,000.
WTOC reached back out to the Caba family after receiving confirmation of Robertos transfer.
In a statement, his father said Roberto is “tired and desperate” and has expressed a desire to leave detention and return to Guatemala to be with his sister.
