History comes alive as Susie King Taylor’s legacy takes the stage

by Shakuria Smith

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - One of Savannah’s most groundbreaking figures is stepping onto the stage.

A new Black History play honoring Susie King Taylor will debut Feb. 20, celebrating the life of a woman who helped shape the city and the nation.

Taylor is remembered as the first African American nurse in the Civil War, the first teacher of freed Black children in Savannah and the author of the only known Civil War memoir written by a Black woman. She also became the first woman and person of color to have a Savannah square named in her honor.

Organizers say the production aims to bring her legacy to life while educating audiences about her lasting impact on history.

Tickets are now available online for upcoming performances at www.40acresandamule.org/susiekingtaylor-theplay
