Historic popcorn wagon marks 120 years at Heritage tournament

by Aaron Dixon

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WTOC) - A popcorn wagon at the Heritage tournament is celebrating its 120th birthday this year after more than 25 years of service at the event.

The wagon serves as a fundraiser for the VanLandingham Rotary Club, which uses proceeds to support children’s charities on Hilton Head Island.

Former club president Jim Dixon said the wagon is the only place on the tour where fans can get freshly popped popcorn.

The wagon was originally owned by promotional professional Charles Frazier. After years of use, the wagon became run down and needed repair.

The rotary club bought it from Frazier for one dollar and fixed it up.

For 25 years, rotary club volunteers have operated the wagon, selling freshly popped popcorn to raise money for children’s charities on the island.

The wagon has maintained its appearance for 120 years, though it has received upgrades including a new popcorn popper that was recently installed.

Fans, rotary club members and golfers stop by the wagon during the Heritage.

“We’ve had golfers come up during tournament. Golfers come up on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, especially during the Pro-Am come up and get popcorn so that means a lot to us too, but at the end of the day we are doing it for the kids,” Dixon said.

The wagon is located between holes 8 and 9.
