REGISTER, Ga. (WTOC) - The Georgia State Patrol reported a person died on Thursday, May 7, after being hit on Pulaski Road while trying to get their bike off the roadway.

According to GSP’s report, it happened just after 10 p.m. on Pulaski Rd. near Flower Rd. Troopers, deputies, and EMS personnel confirmed the pedestrian, 68-year-old Darnell Hodges, was dead at the scene.

GSP said a witness stated they stopped to help Hodges after he fell in the roadway. They stated that Hodges was trying to get the bike when a car hit him, before continuing east towards Statesboro.

According to GSP, Candler County deputies found the car using FLOCK camera footage. They then detained the driver for an interview.

“The witness captured the incident on a dash camera, and the suspect vehicle was described as a small silver SUV with front-end damage. No vehicle parts were located in the roadway,” they wrote. “The GSP Troop F Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT-F) is assisting with the investigation, which remains active.”

This is a developing story.
