Georgia Southern students walk out in ICE protest
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Students at Georgia Southern University walked out Friday in protest of ICE operations, joining a nationwide demonstration against recent federal immigration raids.
Students gathered at the GSU sign on Science Drive off of Abercorn Street.
Organizers in Savannah are participating in what activists call the “National Shutdown,” a grassroots effort asking people to skip work, school and shopping for a day.
We spoke to the organizer of the walk out, Tycen Toms about the demonstration.
“Something like this is important because as we’re looking around the world right now and in the nation, we see ICE’s attack on our neighbors. We see our immigrant communities being sabotaged, people being kidnapped. We can’t just stay inside right. Getting a good grade is not going to keep us from getting penalties by fascism,” said Toms.
Supporters describe the coordinated action as a general strike against recent ICE actions and a push for changes in immigration policy.
The protests stem from recent ICE raids and federal operations in Minnesota.
Local activists in Savannah are urging residents to join the coordinated campaign.

Organizers are also planning a rally Saturday at noon in Forsyth Park to build support and maintain momentum in solidarity with similar actions in Minnesota and across the country.
