Celebrate history and culture at Fort Frederica’s African American Heritage Festival
ST. SIMMONS ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - A celebration of history, culture, and community is returning to the Georgia coast. The annual festival highlights the rich African American heritage of St. Simons Island through music, storytelling, traditional crafts, and historical presentations, bringing together local organizations, performers, and community partners.
The National Park Service is inviting the public to the African American Heritage Festival at Fort Frederica National Monument on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to all ages.
What to expect
Visitors can explore exhibitor booths set up behind the Visitor Center, featuring local institutions and historic sites sharing stories and traditions from the region.
Live programming will take place throughout the day at the park’s outdoor amphitheater, featuring performances by the internationally recognized Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters, who will showcase Gullah Geechee traditions through music and dance.
Visitors can also enjoy live jazz from the Phil Morrison Trio and a historical presentation by Jason Vaughn exploring the life and legacy of Robert S. Abbott, a prominent entrepreneur born on St. Simons Island whose family cemetery is located within the park.
