Anti-war protesters gather outside Hunter Army Airfield amid rising U.S.-Iran tensions

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - As tensions with Iran escalate and strikes continue in Lebanon, a small group of demonstrators gathered outside Hunter Army Airfield on Wednesday to urge the United States to stay out of a war with Iran.

About 10 protesters stood near the front gates holding signs, including messages such as “Stop the war in Iran,” as Savannah police monitored the demonstration.

The protest comes after President Donald Trump announced what he described as a conditional two-week ceasefire with Iran. The White House has said the agreement would require Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and halt uranium enrichment.

Iran, however, has claimed the U.S. violated the agreement by not stopping Israeli attacks on Hezbollah. Iran has also said it suspended tanker traffic in response.

Lauren Nowak, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation and an Army veteran, said Trump’s rhetoric about Iran prompted her and others to take action.

“He has no right to threaten or annihilate civilians in another country,” Nowak said. “Iran is their own sovereign country, they have rights as human beings, and his threat is disgusting, honestly. As a mom and a veteran, I don’t like to see that.”

Nowak said the group is also protesting what she described as a “billionaire agenda,” pointing to U.S. foreign policy issues including the blockade on Cuba and what she called imperialism by the United States and Israel.

She also called for people to participate in a planned May 1 strike, urging “no work, no school, and no shopping.”

What’s next

The group said it plans to continue organizing locally as international tensions evolve.
