“I was so shocked”: Savannah State student expresses housing concerns following isolated flooding incident
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - One video circulating on social media shows shocking conditions at a Savannah State University apartment.
While that situation has been addressed, it’s raising a larger concern about the state of the complex.
One students tells WTOC that Friday was the day she moved into her University Commons apartment and by Saturday when she came back from an event, water began rushing from her ceiling.
Zauria Benson, says it left many of her and her roommate’s items damaged.
All of this happening just days before the start of the school year for students.
“The carpet was coming off the stairs, there’s stuff coming from the ceiling, the counters are all messed up,” said Benson.
She says the issues in her unit, didn’t start with the flooding and since then, other students have commented on her video about prior concerns with the same apartments.
It’s something she hopes the University will address moving forward.
“People were saying they already had the situation in the same dorm and that happened before with the ceiling coming down like ten years ago,” said one student.
WTOC reached out to the University about the issue, overall conditions of the complex and the student’s request to reimburse her for the items damaged.
They sent back a statement that says the situation was "the result of a contained incident in the University Commons complex, where a clogged toilet overflowed and caused significant damage to two units. The affected students were promptly relocated to another unit to ensure their safety and comfort.
Additionally, the university is actively working to address all housing concerns."
Benson hopes the issues here at University Commons can be resolved quickly for her and other students.
