Fleming will face Democrat Penny Brown Reynolds this fall for the open seat. Reynolds defeated Dana Barrett in Tuesday’s runoff election.
One of the most immediate tasks facing Georgia’s 15th secretary of state will be overseeing the 2028 elections that will feature the state’s soon-to-be-redrawn legislative and congressional maps.
Georgia lawmakers are reconvening Wednesday for a special session, called by Gov. Brian Kemp, that will also decide on the future of electronic or paper ballots in Georgia elections.

Georgia has elected a Republican to the office since 2007, when Karen Handel became the state’s first Republican female secretary of state. Handel replaced Democrat Cathy Cox, who launched an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid that year.
