Amanda Hollowell secures Democratic nomination for U.S. House seat in Georgia’s 1st Congressional District

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Amanda Hollowell has officially secured the Democratic nomination for Georgia’s 1st Congressional District after defeating military veteran Joyce Marie Griggs in the primary election.

She will face Republican nominee Jim Kingston in the November general election.

Eight Democratic candidates initially sought the nomination, but the race ultimately came down to Hollowell and Griggs.

Hollowell emphasized jobs, economic justice

Hollowell said voters consistently raised concerns about job creation, affordability and improving quality of life across the district.

Her campaign centered on a 10-point Affordability Agenda focused on lowering costs, creating economic opportunities and supporting working families.

Hollowell also leads the online advocacy organization Color of Change, where she has spearheaded campaigns focused on voting rights, economic justice and healthcare.

“I feel amazing. As a new candidate, this is what everyone wishes to go from eight candidates, down to two, to down to now you’re the person that’s going to run for congress with the democratic party,” she said after the win. “It was happy tears, it was hope, it was joy, and it was just folks who really understand -- we see the future in this campaign and they want to be a part of that.”

With the Democratic primary decided, Hollowell now turns her attention to the November general election against Kingston.

“This is what’s part of democracy. It’s making sure you’re producing the best platform, that people actually want to come into. I’m not about party division. What I’m about is people and solutions and that’s what folks need right now.”

Griggs focused on healthcare, affordability

Throughout her campaign, Griggs emphasized connecting directly with voters through conversations on front porches, in churches and at community centers.

She called for improving healthcare access across the district by lowering out-of-pocket costs, supporting community health centers and expanding the healthcare workforce.

Affordability was also a priority for Griggs, who proposed measures to stop price gouging, strengthen domestic supply chains, invest in energy security and reduce prescription drug costs.

“I’m here for the people and I have always helped the people. I’ve worked in the communities, I’ve listened to them, I’ve helped them find solutions to problems, and I will still do that,” she said after the loss. “It’s been exciting and I thank God for all the people that have supported me. I thank God for putting in this position. I have always been a servant and I’m still going to serve no matter what.”
