Saluting Our Heroes: Navy Veteran Faye Prescott builds a lifeline for veterans in need

by Vincent Hill

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - WTOC is saluting our heroes. And sometimes, it’s not those currently in uniform making the biggest difference — it’s veterans like Faye Prescott, whose service sparked a mission to help others when they need it most.

Prescott grew up in a military family, but she didn’t initially plan to follow in her father’s footsteps.

“I would see him go to the field. I would see him doing that PT and carrying those rucksacks and everything on his back and that was just not for me,” Prescott said.

Instead, she enlisted in the Navy. But when she left the service in 1993, she quickly learned that transitioning to civilian life came with its own challenges.

“It was different,” she said.

Like many veterans, Prescott found herself unsure of what benefits and resources were available after separation.

“I was in the unknown. There was a lot of stuff that I didn’t know when I got out,” Prescott said.

That uncertainty became the motivation behind My Veterans Place Savannah, an organization she founded with her husband — also a veteran — to connect veterans with critical help during their greatest times of need.

“We provide emergency assistance for those that are experiencing homelessness,” Prescott explained.

The support goes well beyond one type of service. Prescott says the organization steps in wherever the need is urgent — from basic necessities to unexpected emergencies.

“We’ve changed tires, we’ve taken cars to get new tires. We’ve delivered groceries,” she said.

In her words, the list of what they don’t do is shorter than what they do.

“I guess our shorter list is what we don’t do,” Prescott said.

This year marks a major milestone: five years of serving veterans one by one — work Prescott says is only expanding from here.

“My mission won’t stop. It will continue,” she said. “I’m building this organization to be able to continue even when I’m not here, because as long as there’s an armed force, there’s a need for this organization.”

WTOC salutes Faye Prescott. My Veterans Place Savannah has helped thousands of veterans — not just locally, but across the country. If you’re a veteran in need of assistance, call 912-733-2113.
