GDOT to activate new pedestrian safety beacon on Victory Drive

by Tyler Walls

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - State transportation officials are preparing to activate a new pedestrian safety signal on one of Savannah’s busiest corridors next week.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced that a new pedestrian hybrid beacon will be activated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 80/Victory Drive and Atlantic Avenue on Thursday, Aug. 27, weather permitting.

The signal was requested by the City of Savannah to help pedestrians safely cross U.S. 80.

How it works

Unlike traditional traffic signals, a pedestrian hybrid beacon remains dark until a pedestrian pushes the button to cross. Once activated, the signal flashes yellow, then turns solid red to signal motorists to stop. After pedestrians safely cross, the light flashes red, allowing motorists to proceed if the crosswalk is clear.

Message boards will be placed near Atlantic Avenue to notify drivers of the upcoming activation date.

GDOT officials emphasized that the effectiveness of the new signal relies on both motorists and pedestrians following the traffic rules.
