ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Atlanta is bustling as one of the FIFA World Cup 2026 host cities — and the extra activities could disrupt mail in the city and surrounding areas, including Smyrna.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has posted a “Service Alert” for Atlanta and other cities hosting World Cup matches lasting from June 11 through July 19, the end of the sporting event.
The alert said the matches “may impact the processing, transportation, and delivery of mail and packages” in Atlanta and the other host cities.
In a statement, a USPS spokesperson told Atlanta News First the agency posted the alert “in case delivery delays do occur in the cities listed.”
The spokesperson said USPS is “currently experiencing no systemic mail delivery delays in the Atlanta area,” but that “local postal management is monitoring operations throughout the FIFA events to help ensure continued reliable service.”

“Regarding alleged mail service delays, the U.S. Postal Service is currently experiencing no systemic mail delivery delays in the Atlanta area. We continue to deliver mail and packages to our customers, and local postal management is monitoring operations throughout the FIFA events to help ensure continued reliable service. Customers with specific delivery concerns are encouraged to contact their local post office, call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777), or visit us on our website at www.usps.com/help for assistance."
According to the Smyrna officials, USPS informed city leaders that Smyrna could experience mail delays through July 19. In response, the city is waiving all late fees for June until service returns to normal.
“We understand the importance of receiving your billing information on time and appreciate your patience and understanding during this temporary disruption,” the city said in a statement. “We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may cause and thank you for your continued cooperation.”
It’s unclear whether the disruption will affect any other metro Atlanta cities. Thousands of visitors are expected to be in Atlanta for the World Cup matches, which could significantly impact traffic, possibly disrupting postal delivery routes.
