Chatham County extends property tax exemption filing deadline to July 31

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC)— Homeowners in Chatham County who missed the April 1 deadline to apply for a property tax exemption still have time to file under an extended window created by recently enacted legislation.

The Chatham County Board of Assessors mailed 2026 Notices of Assessment on Tuesday, June 16. The county says Friday, July 31, 2026, is now the deadline to apply for a Homestead/Stephen’s Day Exemption and other qualifying property tax exemptions, as well as the property assessment appeal deadline.

“This extended filing period gives homeowners another opportunity to reduce their property tax bill,” Chatham County Tax Commissioner Sonya L. Jackson said in a statement. She encouraged homeowners to review their Notice of Assessment before the July 31 deadline to ensure they’re receiving all exemptions for which they qualify.

Officials say homeowners who already have a Homestead/Stephen’s Day Exemption on their primary residence do not need to reapply, but some residents may qualify for additional exemptions.

Additional exemptions may be available for:

• Homeowners 62 and older
• Individuals with qualifying disabilities
• Qualifying disabled veterans
• Other eligible property owners under Georgia law

Residents who have never applied for a homestead exemption and own and occupy their home as their primary residence are encouraged to apply before the deadline.
