Bluffton kicks off July 4 weekend with flag ceremony; Drone show and fireworks to come

by Aaron Dixon

BLUFFTON, S.C. (WTOC) - July 4 celebrations are ramping up across the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry, and Bluffton is getting an early start with a two-day lineup of patriotic events tied to America’s 250th anniversary.

The town began its holiday weekend with a community flag ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park at Buckwalter Place Park, where residents gathered in red, white and blue to honor the nation’s history, recognize military service members and veterans, and celebrate together.

During the ceremony, the Sons of the American Revolution presented Bluffton with a certificate commending the town for properly displaying and honoring the American flag throughout the year.

Bluffton Town Councilman Dan Wood said the event was personal for him, noting that his father served during World War II and is recognized at the park.

“It’s a solemn event in a place like Veterans’ Park, but it’s worthy of it,” Wood said. “Just remember why you are celebrating July 4th, be safe, and be careful.”

Officials emphasize safety ahead of large crowds

With thousands expected at events Thursday and Friday, Bluffton officials are reminding families to stay aware, especially in crowded areas.

“When we have all these events, parents tend to let kids go and wander around. Keep an eye on your kids,” Bluffton Police Chief Joseph Babkiewicz said.

Babkiewicz also urged residents to leave fireworks to professionals, saying fireworks are illegal within the Town of Bluffton.

“Let the professionals do the fireworks; do not do fireworks yourself,” he said. “That’s why we have all these events, so people can come out and enjoy them.”

Chief Babkiewicz also says that they will have extra officers on the road over the next two days.

He says they don’t want to spoil any July 4 fun, but they just want to make sure people are celebrating safely.
