Tybee Island mailing residents notice of galvanized service lines needing replacement
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - The city of Tybee is mailing notices to customers whose properties have been identified with galvanized service lines requiring replacement.
Tybee Island says no lead service lines were found during their system-wide inventory, but some galvanized pipes may have absorbed lead if lead fittings were once present.
The EPA requires these lines be replaced, and the city says they launch a replacement program in the coming years.
Official notices with details are being mailed directly to affected customers.
What you should know about lead exposure
Lead exposure can pose health risks — especially to infants, children, and pregnant women.
Adults may face increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, and kidney or nervous system problems.
Things you can do in the mean time
- Use a certified water filter that removes lead.
- Clean faucet aerators regularly.
- Always use cold water for drinking, cooking, and baby formula.
- Run your tap before use if water has been sitting in the pipes.
