Effingham County students to eat free this school year thanks to $4.8M OpenAI grant

SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (WTOC) - Thanks to a multi-million dollar grant, families in Effingham County are sending their children to school with one less expense to worry about this year.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, all 14,148 students in the Effingham County School District—from Pre-K through 12th grade—will receive free breakfast and lunch for the entirety of the 2026-2027 school year.

The $4.8 million grant is funded by OpenAI’s $80 million Community Fund under “Project Camellia,” an initiative designed to provide direct economic support to local families in communities where the technology company operates.

Effingham County School District Superintendent Yancy Ford said the district met with OpenAI to discuss immediate needs, and school meals quickly rose to the top of the priority list.

“They asked me what is one particular immediate impact that they could help with our school district, and I quickly went to our school breakfast and school lunch program,” Ford said. “It affects everybody, and as we all know, breakfast and lunch is very important for our students.”

While more than 7,000 students in the district already qualified for state-funded free or reduced lunch, this grant expands the benefit to cover every single student in the district.

School officials noted that OpenAI’s funding is only committed for the current school year, and there is no confirmation yet on whether the program will continue next year. For now, district leaders say the immediate relief for local families will go far beyond the cafeteria doors.
