Toombs Co. woman pleads guilty in death of 4-year-old daughter
TOOMBS COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - A Toombs County woman has pleaded guilty for the death of her four-year old daughter, Reese Carter Hughes, who passed away on March 14.
But now, the Toombs County Sheriff says that justice is beginning to be served in this case.
“I watched it take a toll on a lot of folks but not only that, but it hit our town very hard,” said Kight.
Before entering her plea, Hughes provided investigators with information and agreed to testify against Brown.
“On her own, [she] offered to provide us with a lot of information concerning the case that was...tough to hear but it was essential,” said Kight.
Chief Judge Robert Reeves accepted Hughes’ guilty plea to one count of felony murder and two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree.
Taylor Hughes was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 concurrent.
Sheriff Kight says that he knows that for the small community that this case impacted, there are mixed reactions to Taylor Hughes fate.
“We know that some people are not going to understand why she has pleaded to a life sent, or allowed to plead to life sentence,” said Kight. “There’s things you have to think about, and we definitely consult with the families, a lot.”
Kight says that Brown’s trial is expected to begin in October.
