Back to School Bash helps hundreds of families before the first day

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Savannah Police Department and the Savannah Impact Program held a Back to School Bash Saturday, distributing free book bags and school supplies to more than 300 families.

Latoyia Daniels said this is the third year of the event. The program originally served between 20 and 50 families when it launched.

SPD officers distributed supplies on a first-come, first-served basis. The event also featured live music, games, and prizes.

Daniels said the event was made possible through multiple collaborators and donors.

“We had over 420 backpacks, we had over a hundred hygiene packs, we gave out pens, pencils, any supplies. We gave out uniforms, we gave out raffles, we gave out fully loaded backpacks, we gave out hand sanitizer — anything that was for school, we gave it out,” Daniels said.

Daniels said Savannah Impact also provides mentoring opportunities to the community.
