Tybee Island police increase presence through final weekend of summer break

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - A pop-up party that had been circulating on social media did not take place Saturday, as Tybee Island police increased their presence on the island’s beaches ahead of the final weekend of summer break.

Flyers for a back-to-school event on Tybee Island had been spreading on social media, prompting concern from residents and law enforcement. Two weeks ago, the Tybee Island Police Department issued a statement warning parents about the event and urging them to speak with their children about the potential consequences of attending unpermitted gatherings.

April shooting raised concerns ahead of summer’s end

The heightened response follows an unpermitted pop-up event in April that ended when gunshots were fired on a Tybee Island beach. Police said they were not taking any chances this time around.

By 6 p.m. Saturday, no party had formed. Some residents said they believed the city’s response played a role in that outcome.

“I like that the presence is here because it makes it safer for everyone else,” said Tristan Jackson, a Tybee visitor. “You shouldn’t have to come to Tybee Island and be in fear, you should be able to relax and just kick back.”

Teens say parties have become unsafe

Some Tybee teens said the events have grown out of hand.

“Yeah these parties man, getting out of control, it’s crazy,” said Ahmed, a Tybee teen.

“You can’t come out here and enjoy it because you have to worry about that,” said Landon, another Tybee teen.

Angel Hernandez, another visitor, noted the difference in police visibility compared to past visits.

“Last time I came there were barely any cops around, verses like now, its just like damn all the cops are popping off right now,” Hernandez said.

Mayor urges students to make smart choices

Mayor Brian West said he wants students to act responsibly heading into the new school year.

“I would hate to see them start the school year off making bad choices and losing their freedom and future,” West said.

The mayor said the increased police presence will continue Sunday as the final weekend of summer break concludes.
